Natural Selection II

The three video sculptures Particle Selection and Natural Selection I and II are part of a series of multiple works. The search for the so-called ‘God particle’, a module central to modern elementary particle physics that defines the shape and size of all objects, inspired me to create the first of these works. Thanks to the particle accelerator, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) succeeded in proving its existence a few years ago. I’m presenting a tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition of my own variation with the famous Higgs Particle.

In Natural Selection I and II I try to examine this fundamental term from the theory of evolution. I’m fascinated by nature’s ingenuity in elaborately testing various possibilities, leading to the optimisation of a form. I pick up on this idea and investigate the extent to which incoherent material can be combined. To achieve this, I take anthropogenous objects on the one hand, often waste products as fragments of civilisation, and natural materials on the other. In the process I observe similarities in their appearance and experiment with these. In the final result – the sculpture – we see individual elements from a variety of different origins melt into one another to form an entirely new entity.
